Double headed water dragon by Peskador
Last Friday, the Community Rejuvenation Project completed its second large-scale mural of the year at the corner of 30th and West. The project was located in the heart of the “Ghost Town” neighborhood of West Oakland, so called because of its high murder rate. Despite that, and correspondingly high levels of crime, unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, prostitution, and blight, the neighborhood i...s not without hope, its residents not without community spirit.
Recognizing this struggle, and the need for upliftment, CRP lead artists Mike Threesixty and Desi WOME called the mural “Healing Song.” Many members of the CRP collective participated, among them Pancho Pescador, and CRP Artist in Residency, Release PYC.
In a neighborhood whose nickname represents the casual, almost dismissive attitude toward death, CRP’s “Healing Song” mural aims to make a difference in the way residents and passers-by think about their environment.
